About FGP
The destruction of forests and ecosystems with high biodiversity, is alarming. The responses to this situation, have been reforestation with monocultures.
Rising to the challenge Dr.Ranil Senanayake, an international Systems Ecologist, from Sri Lanka, began designing an ecologically based model of siliviculture, which in 1980 was identified as 'Analog Forestry'.
Analog Forestry
This is a system of silviculture that seeks to establish a tree-dominated ecosystem analogous or similar, in (form) architectural structure and function (ecological services), to the original climax or mature vegetation community of any area.
This approach allows a multitude of benefits, such as:
The creation of microhabitats, so vital for many native species.
The provision of clean water, carbon sequestration and environmental stability.
The production of clean and healthy food.
Analog Forestry is a very effective tool in arresting biodiversity loss. It also provides a greater range of crops and spreads the marketing risks of the individual farmer.
By requiring a strictly organic production base, Analog Forestry rapidly builds up both ecosystem biomass and biodiversity.
This system permits to soak and lock up atmospheric carbon dioxide and hold it in a sequestered state for longer than any other silviculture system.
It provides specialised products of high value that are easily processed at community level.
Analogue Forest Garden
Analog Forest Gardens is a way of farming with tree crops, following the principles of Analog Forestry, which allows the formation of a physical structure and exhibits ecological relations that are similar to those of the original forest. It provides a microhabitat to many species that could not exist without it.
Forest Garden Products ensure the sustainability of these habitats being managed under strict organic production basis, which precludes the application of pesticides, fungicides, herbicides and artificial fertilizer, so that the forest habitat is allowed to mature into a system of high biodiversity.
FOREST GARDEN PRODUCTS
Forest Garden Products are collected exclusively from these forests and are grown by farmers whose practices have been certified to contribute to agricultural sustainability, biodiversity conservation and environmental stability. In addition, as Forest Garden Products (FGPs), have to comply with the standards of Organic Production, where the food is of high nutritional value, devoid of chemical residues and unadulterated by synthetic chemical additives.
Thus, the consumers of FGPs not only purchase the finest, cleanest and freshest food commodities, herbs and spices on the market but also contribute to a change in the lifestyles of tropical subsistence farmers and help reverse the trends in tropical rainforest habitat destruction.
The International Standard Setting Body:
To ensure that the integrity & promise of Analog Forestry is adhered to, the standards that define the producer, processor and shipper of Forest Garden Products, is monitored by the International Analog Forestry Network www.analogforestrynetwork.org headquartered in Costa Rica.
